La Cage Imaginaire

La Cage Imaginaire is an experimental dance film that brings to life a series of expansive paintings on rice paper created by Shiye Xiao, inspired by the butterfly. Presented in three distinct movements, the film captures the stages of the butterfly's transformation: the death of the caterpillar, the emergence from the chrysalis, and the butterfly’s whimsical flight into the world.

Shot at night at The Royal College of Art, the film's evocative setting is designed by Shiye Xiao, blending chaotic, improvised choreography with her ethereal artwork to create a dialogue between movement and visual art. La Cage Imaginaire is a meditation on metamorphosis, life, and rebirth, where the boundaries of the body, nature, and time dissolve into a poetic and dynamic expression of transformation.
